The weekend was crazy thanks to the weather and so unexpected fun. Well the storm came in Wednesday nite and was a pain in the butt for a lot of people and missed up people’s plans.
Well it started getting bad on Thursday during the day when I was working and so I was expecting to go out in the storm unless I had to. Well, there I go assuming again. One of my co-workers needed to run some arenas around town and so I played chauffeur during the day. Not once, not twice but three times I went out. I hate to say it but I had fun in the bad weather. I feel that I drive better in the bad weather.
That nite I signed up for the Jake Frost, which is a race, that goes around MSU campus and usually it is a 5k but this year they also had a 10K. I wouldn’t have mind doing the 10K but not this time not knowing out knowing how good my running is. This would be the first race back since the marathon and I didn’t feel comfortable yet running. So Dan and I signed up for the 5k and I hoped for the best.
Yes even with the 7 degree predicted weather there was still a race. So Friday I drove around town again not with to much trouble and the roads were getting cleaned off by our great City of Springfield works. I even shoveled some snow for a little bit. I live hard work. I miss it but it isn’t always good for the body. That nite Jen and I hanged out and watched movies and relaxed. I packed my bag for the next day ready for any kind of temperature that was given.
Then race day came. It wasn’t as bad has I thought it would be. It was cold and slick out but that is what I was expecting. It was cold but not cold enough for me to ware my shorts, long sleeve shirt, gloves, hat, and racing jersey.
I ran on ice a couple of times back when I was in high school but that was only for practice but never raced on it before. I was planning out going out with Dan but when the gun went off I went out again. I felt comfortable but still it was still fast. The whole course like a big ice ring where we had to watch each other and not fall ourselves. I almost went more then a couple of times but I kept on my feet. My friend Yimmy ran with me and in the last straightway he had a burst of energy and I couldn’t follow. I really didn’t want to hurt myself on the ice so I sped up but not enough to keep up but enough that I was comfortable with.
Ever since I have known Yimmy this is the first time her beat me. I felt sad because I knew I probably could have done better and he ended up with the third place medal in our age group. That could have been me but sometimes that is how it goes. I had thougth about bring my old high school spikes but I didn't think I could fit in them. I now have another competitor that I will just have to watch out for and beat. There will be other times and maybe this weekend it will be another chance for me to do that.
This weekend is the Jingle Bell 5K and the last race for me this year. Hopefully the roads are clear and the weather is nice.
